Canterfield has a long history of prominence. The property was first occupied in 1835 by Captain Thomas H. Thompson, Kane County Commissioner and the County’s first Supervisor. John F. Jelke, owner of the nationally-recognized Jelke Good Luck Margarine Company then purchased the land. Next an insurance company owned the land and founded the Yeoman City of Childhood, an orphanage school on the northern portion of the property. Finally, Edmund H. Haeger and Joseph F. Estes, of the world-renowned Haeger Potteries, purchased the acreage. Canterfield, named by Mrs. Estes, has remained in the Haeger-Estes family ever since.
